SaaS-Based BI: It's the Expertise, Not the Software

来源: 作者: 时间:2007-08-15 点击:
Plenty of organizations want to spread access to actionable information, but a vast BI/data-integration skills gaps stands in the way. A new study sees best-in-class companies tapping analytic apps, outsourcers, BI-on-demand and appliances to fill the void. This week's In-Depth Analysis takes the example of Casual Male and Anchor Blue, two retailers that have hired SaaS vendors to supplement lean BI/data warehousing teams.

Also this week, Mary Hayes Weier reports that Wal-Mart is betting that Hewlett-Packard's new Neoview data warehousing system can help it draw insights from the 800 million transactions generated by its 30 million customers each day. That the $345 billion-a-year retailer would choose Neoview was unexpected, because Neoview is unproven--formally introduced just three months ago--and because Wal-Mart is heavily invested in Teradata. Read on to learn about HP's inside track. 数据挖掘研究院

Finally, after helping to set the standards of the OpenAjax Alliance Hub, TIBCO is taking its own PageBus publish-and-subscribe message bus open source. It's an important integration tool as developers envision componentized Ajax applications.

- Ensure Best-Possible Performance From SaaS
By David Linthicum
Those who leverage enterprise applications have two major complaints. First, the apps are too complex and too difficult to use. Second, they perform poorly, which is what I'm focusing on here. Most SaaS vendors rely on the traditional HTTP/HTML pump-and-pull architecture. Thus, we're really using well-designed, well-delivered Web sites when using SaaS applications, not true, dynamic native interfaces. So, what's a SaaS advocate to do? Here are a few tips. 数据挖掘研究院

- Measuring Microsoft SharePoint Growth
By Alan Pelz-Sharpe
Microsoft SharePoint continues to grow apace. In a presentation to financial analysts earlier this week, Microsoft stated that in the past year it has seen 35-percent year-over-year growth and revenues of a staggering $800 million. The company claims it has shipped 85 million seat licenses to 17,000 customers since the beginning of SharePoint time (in 2001). If there was ever any lingering doubt that SharePoint was having an impact on the market, these numbers put that argument to rest.

- Make Your BI Vendor Partnership a Priority 数据挖掘研究院
By Cindi Howson
When you're buying BI as a point solution or departmental purchase, the idea of a customer-vendor partnership may not matter. When you're buying for the enterprise, it should. While BI software has become enterprise class, BI account management--for the most part--has not. A number of vendors recognize this and have efforts underway to improve the situation. But what can you as the customer do? Here's how to make partnering with the vendor a priority.

- Business Objects' Web 2.0 Features Nice, but Inadequate 数据挖掘研究院
By Neil Raden
You can't solve BI infoglut with mashups. If you're going to spend time threshing through unstructured data, you should build a semantic model to use it. Instead of building features for developers to use to rearrange data in preparation of analysis, why not just make the data smarter so it can rearrange itself? And finally, if you accept the idea that BI 1.0 is inadequate (though still useful), why build 2.0 capabilities on top of an aging 1.0 model?
