Business Intelligence Services

Recently, I have seen more subscription or SaaS (Software as a Service) BI solutions. These are typically geared towards specific industries or functional areas and offer very quick start up times. Map your data to their file format, and you are up and running within a couple of weeks. This is a very tempting solution for companies trying to limit their up-front investments and get a quick turnaround. There are even companies now which will consolidate your data from various service providers and serve you a new set of reports as another subscription.

So are these subscription services a replacement for traditional data warehousing or BI solutions? It might be tempting to think so, particularly for budget-slashing CIOs. But there are problems with such thinking.

Will the vendor be able to respond to changes in your business, as quickly as you need them to? Will you have what you need to answer the important ad hoc questions that inevitably come up in any company, but which are not always planned for? Will the hosted solution allow for the deeper analysis and mining that can reveal important insights about your business beyond generic reports? 数据挖掘研究院

It is important to look at such solutions not as replacement for the data warehouse, but a supplement to it. Ideally, your subscription services will be populated from exports out of your data warehouse. In reality, such solutions are data marts, a collection of selected data elements and formats geared towards a specific audience (i.e. - sales, marketing, operations, etc.).

To rely solely on SaaS solutions for your business intelligence is to miss out on many of the opportunities and ROI that can be achieved through a well architected BI program.
